My First Encounter with the Local ChurchMy first encounter with the local church took place 15 years ago. Since then, I have come to know the local church as a group of believers who care not for traditions but for God and what is in God's heart as revealed in His Word. One example of this is the members' endeavor to recover the day-to-day, home-based church life as recorded in Acts 2:46 And day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they partook of their food with exultation and simplicity of heart. This verse embodies my impression of church when I first met these believers in 1988. I was eight then; and through my younger sister's kindergarten friend, I was invited to a Christian children meeting held every Saturday afternoon at Mrs. Chong's home. Mrs. Chong was a sister who met with the local church. She opened up her home and invited kids from the neighborhood for this meeting in her home. We would sing some Christian songs, listen to some Bible stories, have some snacks and do some craftwork. A seemingly simple weekend activity attracted me to the homey, loving and caring atmosphere. After my first visit, my siblings and I would go back every week, eventually arousing the curiosity of my parents. The gospel was eventually preached to them and now, thanks to that one home, my family is now loving and pursuing the Lord with many other believers in the local church. Melinda Ler | Back to List |
